Medical Students

A 4-week elective in Ophthalmology is offered to medical students from Wayne State University School of Medicine and from other accredited medical schools. Students can expect to acquire the basic clinical skills needed to assess patients with eye problems. The medical student will have a chance to observe and evaluate ophthalmic disease in various specialty clinics including retina, cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatrics, glaucoma, and oculoplastics. Additionally, students will be able to observe the various surgical procedures in these fields.

The Fraser Vision Scholar M.D./M.S. Dual Degree Program in Ophthalmology, Visual, and Anatomical Sciences

The Wayne State University School of Medicine M.D./M.S. dual-degree program offers medical students a structured opportunity to integrate rigorous graduate research training with their medical education. Through completion of the M.S. degree in the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences, students develop advanced skills in biomedical research while maintaining progress toward the M.D. degree. This program prepares future physicians for careers in academic medicine and clinical research.

About

The Wayne State University School of Medicine M.D./M.S. dual-degree program is designed for medical students seeking a deeper immersion in research alongside their medical education. The program integrates the School of Medicine’s M.D. curriculum with a structured M.S. experience that emphasizes hypothesis-driven inquiry, mentored scholarship, and completion of a written thesis.

During the intensive one-year graduate experience, students complete the M.S. portion of the program in the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences (OVAS). OVAS provides graduate training in Anatomy and Cell Biology, supported by departmental strengths in vision science and neuroscience. Research areas include diabetic retinopathy, microbial pathogenesis, vascular biology, neural processing, and neurodegenerative disease.

All students complete a written thesis that strengthens their ability to design, conduct, and communicate original scholarly work. The dual-degree program supports the development of physician-scientists and physician-educators equipped to advance discovery, education, and innovation in medicine.

Eligibility and Admissions

Applicants to the M.D./M.S. program are typically second- or third-year medical students in good academic standing and must meet Wayne State University Graduate School requirements.

Applications are due on January 30th and applicants will be notified of the admissions decision by February 6th. Admission to the program comes with a full-tuition waiver of the M.S. portion of the program.
