Dong H Shin, MD, PhD, Lecture in Glaucoma

Bruce E. Prum, Jr., MD is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia since 1995. He has been a clinical trials specialist with career-lasting involvement in many glaucoma drug trials (6, including one with Dong H. Shin, MD, PhD) and the AGIS (1993-2004), TVT (2000-2026), and PTVT (2008-2024) studies of traditional glaucoma procedures. These surgical trials compared Trabeculectomy to Laser Trabeculoplasty (AGIS) and compared Trabeculectomy to the Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant (TVT and PTVT). He has been member and Chairman of the AAO Preferred Practice Pattern Committee for Glaucoma to write national guidelines for the management of glaucoma three times (2002-18). He is an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology  to administer the Oral Board Exam many times (2001-Present). He is Chairman of the Promotion and Tenure Committee for his department (2020-Present). He has published mainly from his surgical and medical trials and on the management of glaucoma after corneal transplants with a pars plana glaucoma implant. He has written two book chapters on Normal-Tension Glaucoma. Dr. Prum stepped away from surgery after 35 years in February 2026. But he continues active medical glaucoma practice and performs anterior segment lasers. Since February, Dr. Prum has had time to reflect on his whole surgical career and shares his perspective on trends in traditional glaucoma surgery until now with a look towards the future of MIGS. He will share insights on coding for glaucoma gained from past failures and, as a result, offers future hope from new lessons learned.
