Didactic Program
Basic Science Lectures: Wednesday afternoons from 2-5 are protected time for lectures focused on the AAO Basic Science Clinical Course.

Cataract Competency Course: Faculty present a series of cataract focused lectures early in the academic year to prepare residents for surgical cases.

​
Grand Rounds: Grand Rounds are held weekly on Wednesday evenings where three residents present and discuss cases with peers, faculty and medical students.
​
​
Grand Rounds Quiz: Residents are given weekly “grand rounds quizzes" by a faculty member covering their area of subspecialty expertise. The answers are then immediately reviewed and discussed upon completion of the quizzes. The purpose of the quizzes is for residents to assess their fund of knowledge and to prepare for the OKAP examinations.

Morbidity and Mortality Conferences: M&M sessions are built into the didactic schedule and Surgical M&Ms are also highlighted throughout the academic year.

Journal Club: Ophthalmology Journal Clubs are held approximately 6 times per year and are hosted by faculty members.

​
BCSC Book Club: The monthly book club for PGY2 residents are held virtually, each month focusing on a different sub specialty. Senior residents and faculty members lead discussions regarding the reading assignments.

Pathology Lecture Series: In person lecture series with eminent pathologist Robert Folberg. The returning lecture series has been highly praised by faculty and residents.

OKAP Review Sessions: OKAP review sessions are built into the academic schedule leading up to the in service exam and are given by faculty members in all subspecialties. Residents are also provided access to the AAO Question bank from the program.

Clinical Conference: Each year all 21 ophthalmology residents will present a research project at the Annual Clinical Conference: Update in Ophthalmology. The conference highlights the resident research efforts each year. In addition 2-3 national renowned guest lecturers present during the conference. The event is followed by an evening graduation and awards reception at a new location in downtown Detroit to celebrate all of the resident accomplishments.

Visiting Lecture Series: Kresge is proud to have a monthly visiting lecture series highlighting a range of subspecialties and renowned ophthalmologists from around the country. Typically 2-3 of these lectures are held offsite and community ophthalmologists, residents and medical students are among the attendees.
