Medical Students

Kresge Eye Institute maintains a commitment to the
training of medical students. The department of ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine offers a one-month elective for students who wish to receive an introduction to clinical ophthalmology. The purpose of the elective is for students to become familiar with ophthalmology as a medical and surgical specialty as well as the many subspecialties of ophthalmology.

During the one-month rotation, students will have the opportunity to learn the principles of the ophthalmic examination including how to use specialized ophthalmic instruments as well as the opportunity to observe surgery. Students will become familiar with outpatient eye care, surgical care of eye patients, diagnostic and therapeutic applications of lasers, ultrasound and fluoresce in angiography and ophthalmic emergencies. The one-month elective is divided into four one week blocks to give students an overview of glaucoma, oculoplastics, pediatrics and retina.
